I don’t blame the Americans though. I like to drive legacy cars, even though rationally speaking modern ones are much better. Americans still use legacy units for the exact same reason. Nostalgia.

Engineer here. I still don’t know how many damn ounces are in a gallon. or pint. or quart. But how many ml are in a liter. 1000, because BASE OF 10 FOR THE WIN!

Only one I know who still uses english as the primary units is military. Worked at AM General and everything is english. Almost every bolt on the trucks have a 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" or 3/4" head.

I have a BSME and work in a specialty manufacturing company and nearly every single thing we do is in english units. They work great for anything you’re doing in sheet goods.

My argument for metric over english is always, if a 13/32" socket is too small for a bolt head, what’s the next size up...........
Whereas if I said a 12mm socket is too small, I’d try the 13mm next.

We still use English units at GE Aviation. lbm and lbf are the bane of my existence

...except that different industries start skipping sizes differently (the dumbasses), the SAE has pretty much nailed down what the inch tool size progression is, and ease in English units is a matter of practice. Truly. How do you think the English managed with non-decimal currency for so long just fine, down to the dumbiest mud-cranium peasant? Also, 13/32 socket what the fuck

lbm and lbf, slug, are the worst thing ever.

I was referring to a person working on say an engine, and one socket not fitting so they have to do mental math to determine the next size

Let’s consider here whether we really want someone who a. doesn’t have their tools arranged, b. doesn’t have the capacity for mental math, c. has not spent time working with SAE tools, d. does not have foresight to have a reference of any kind on hand, or e. all of the above working on an engine. Or, say, almost anything with fasteners on it at all. If I was made aware of this shit at age 8 or so, I want anyone who isn’t in adulthood to stay the fuck out of working on anything SAE until they try to approach one of the above options. Seriously.
